Our Basenjis are getting on a bit now! Bow will be 12 in December, Breezi is now 10. Our Scottish terriers are now the youngest and are always getting bored. Surfing on the Internet one evening I came across the site “Eldorado Basenjis” www.eldoradobasenji.com Two sisters, residents of Massachusetts, highly dedicated breeders in the “African Stock Project” and long-time friends of Susan Coe of “Akuaba’s”. They had had another gorgeous brindle litter, one good-looking puppy after another, and I asked myself: Why not????? I wrote an e-mail to Susan Coe, who now lives in Australia, asking her for advice, and I also wrote an e-mail to the two sisters, Lund and Geoffroy… just to see what might happen. The sisters replied quickly – they were pleased to hear of my interest, but….. 1. they wouldn’t be letting go of the puppies until the AKC Championship, meaning having to wait for many months 2. most of them were already spoken for, with just two males still available. All of a sudden, I lost my enthusiasm. Another male, to add to my dominant Newfoundland male Lele and to Bow? Not such a great idea! And a one-year old one, as well? Susan also answered my e-mail and shared my opinion, but told me about a bitch, almost one year old, also a brindle and which she considered the best in the litter, but which nevertheless was definitely still available. In addition, with puppies, you can never be sure what they’re going to grow into, but a one year-old one….. So the two sisters offered me Chyna, a really sweet brindle bitch and almost finished with her first championship.
After that, everything went really quickly, money transferred (the dollar at a better rate than ever), Chyna got quickly ready, vaccinations and papers completed and, on May 10th, Chyna landed in Frankfurt. Jürgen was there waiting for her and then drove on with her to Spain. Here, everything was set for the big reception!!! But our “Maus” was as scared as a real one. The absolute freedom she could enjoy here was completely new to her – the only time she was ever really happy was when she was in her kennel. She would also pee and poo everywhere – and for heaven’s sake please DON’T touch - and MEN… pure dread!!!! So it’s safe to say that we had our teething problems!!! At times, I even thought, what on earth have I done???????? She’s now been with us for almost six months and things are going A LOT better!!!! With the other dogs, no problem, with Scottish terriers you can really mess up, and you could tear the Newfies hair out and they wouldn’t say a thing, and the other Basenjis, they’re so ancient now, they just grumble, we can ignore them. The mistress is really nice, always gives me food, the master’s also been OK so far, always giving me chocolate, and then there’s another man, a lot younger, who plays ball with me, he’s super too.
We’re all looking towards the future with great optimism!!! Not least because she’s performing brilliantly at shows. You’ll be hearing from us again!!!!!
