Gibraltar
Surely
you heard already once of it or you were already there, on
this rocky peninsula in the deepest south of Spain, which
however doesn`t belong to Spain since some centuries but
British colony on Spanish soil and that not at all to the
Spanish joy. Briefly some information: since 711 Muslim
fortress, 1462 Spanish, 1704 British, since 1830 British
colony, a peninsula with a 425 m high lime rock, about 5.8
qkm, situated at one of the strategically most important
straits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean,
seperates Europe and Africa, a British enclave with a
multicultural mixture from Gibaltarian British, Spaniards,
Maroccans and Indian and naturally tourists on the hunt for
duty-free commodity. The most well-known inhabitans of this
rock are however the Barbary apes imported by the British in
the 18th century from North Africa. It means, as
long as they live on Gibraltar, the” Rock” remains
British. As inpartriated Spanish our Basenjis wanted to
terminate this affair very fast, we intervened this however,
we didn`t want to cause any international tensions. Now you
will ask yourselves surely: what do they look for down there?
Well, which already!!!
The
16th Int. and Nat. Dog Show of the Gibraltar Kennel
Club
With
approximately 700 km journey we still belonged to the
so-called “Short-Distance-Traveller”. We passed at
well-known places such as Granada, Malaga, Torremolinos and
Marbella, we reached La Linea, the small border-town placed
along the Bay.
The
typical British border fomalities for animals are omitted
fortunately. A strange thing: to come into Gibraltar you have
to cross the runway of the airport and then you come directly
in the center. Easily we found due to the well-placed signs
the exhibition-hall at the dock-end in the port. Here the
catalogue,” sniffing around” who is there again from the
annoying competion, looking for a shady place for the dogs,
everything as usual. There were Merce Pons and Francesco
Solana from Barcelone – we met already in the hotel – then
we dropped over Ana Pena and Enrique Gomez from Madrid,
secretary of the Spanish Newfoundland-Club. Exhibitors from
all over Europe, from Morocco and Israel came together on this
penisula for a great “Dog-Meeting” – on both days more
than 600 dogs were inscribed.
Today
on Saturday only the GCC – the Gibraltar-Championship-Award,
similar to our CAC – was assigned. Judge was Mrs. K. Creamer
from Ireland. All dogs were examined most precisely, it was
obvious that she took special value on the dentures.
6
males and 5 bitches were in competion. BOB became the male Atwater
Crazy Diamond Borgoleonardo, World-Winner 2001 in
Portugal, owner Fernando Gomez/Portugal.
Best Bitch became Karazan
Night and Day of Rrita and Nuno Cavalho/Portugal.
Generally
one could say that today the old, classical typ was in front.

Sunday:
the same procedure again! Today besides the GCC also the CACIB
was assigned. All dogs of the day before started again.
Atwater Crazy Diamond Borgoleonardo had to start today in the
Champion-Class as he reached with his yesterday 2nd
point the Gibraltar Champioship. Todays judge was Mr.
Selimovic /Croatia. He tended more to the American typ. So
Best Male Open Class became Twillin Gate Your Dream by
Plevoets/Belgium, Best Bitch became Dhydra di Borgoleonardo
of Solana-Pons from Barcelone. BOB became Ch. Atwater
Crazy Diamond Borgoleonardo of Fernando Gomez/Portugal.

This
time the Newfie-community was quite content with the today`s
results.Naturally someone is always disappointed, but there is:
the next show!
We
this time had no Newfies with us, they were still in
swim-shorts, but our Basenjis left us not in the pass. Our old
male Bow “Akuaba`s Nite Lites” returned from his
retirement only for Gibraltar and to show the young folks
which way to go. He won his GCC and left proudly the
exhibition as Gibraltar champion!
Clouds,
nebulas, rain – a more British than a South-European weather,
without further sightseeing and after a departure waiting for
more than an hour we left direction north, direction beloved
Moraira

See
you again, friends – hasta luego, amigos!
