Gold - Cup  2002

Each year anyone who wants to see and be seen in the European world of Newfoundlands heads southwards, towards Italy, to the S.A.T. Gold Cup. For a change, the order of the day this year was Catelletto di Ticino, on the southern end of lake Lago Maggiore.

I was thus drawn out of a cold and wet Spain, northwards into the sunshine – with two Newfoundlands, our “New” Lele and our old Bonny as hand baggage! A grooming appointment had luckily been made earlier. As our two soaking wet black dogs entered the salon, they had to wait in line. Passersby with open mouths stood at the window and stared amazed just as I did at Umberto Lehmann, who transformed many quadrupeds into fashionable beings again. The breeds could finally be recognized once more. Oops, that was a bit premature – the rain in Milan totally ruined the styling!

In any case, on the first show day, Saturday, May 11, most of the damage to self-confidences and coats had been vanquished. Early in the morning, one could hear the drone of hair dryers wafting over the vast “Cascina della Route” horse ranch, and the grooming competition was in full swing with much combing, brushing, and some snipping going on. After I had surrendered my two Newfoundlands to Manlio Massa’s team, I had to satisfy my curiosity and take a peek at who was there.

I first bumped into the Jäger family (from Lumberg), and then into Marion Pfordt (the VND President), who goaded me into writing this account. After meeting the Bogarts family (Twillin Gate), I heard wisps of my new- native tongue and ran into Luis Fernandez (President of Cetr/Spain) and Noelia Garcia (Rain Coast).

On the first day, 175 Newfoundlands competed, followed by 185 the next day. One hundred exhibitors from Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Hungary, Switzerland, and Austria vied for the prizes with their dogs.

But the judges - Mrs. Diane Price /USA  (Kendian) and Mr. Ole Pedersen / Denmark (Mount Cook) – were just unflappable.

From a German viewpoint, the dogs belonging to VND members did do extremely well. VND (Verein von Neufundländer-Freunden und –Züchtern in Deutschland) is a  small but committed club that has no reason whatsoever to shy away from the European elite.

Attached is a list of the first two winners in each category. You’ll find other results in the Internet under:

The first day was topped off with a banquet – excellent Italian cuisine with lots of red and white wine, an awards ceremony, and a raffle.

Sunday continued with the same activities, except that the judges were switched – in other words, Mrs. Diane Price now judged the males and Mr. Ole Pedersen the bitches. Much sought after was the team of photographers around Roberto Corbelletti, who could immediately convert and print out each shot, so that exhibitors could marvel over their picture alongside their own Newfoundland.

The afternoon did not hinder any of the exhibitors from continuing to voice their judgments – since the final leg was now underway. Nobody left before the end. The nearby country roads were filled with amazed onlookers on bicycles, motorcycles, and cars. This region was packed with tourists, especially since the weather at last showed its best side.

Mr. Paul Oden Kirken (Canada) did the final judging. His remark that the Newfoundlands at the competition were among the best, was just pure music to our ears!

And then:

The 7th Gold Cup Winner was announced:

Ch. Cayuga I’m a Gentleman Daughter

 F: Ch.Pouch Cove’s Patriot of Cayuga

M: Ch.Cayuga Ruby Tuesday of Bonaventura

Following long farewells, everyone packed their bags, stowed away their dogs, and headed home. In spite of a 1.600 km stretch, my Newfoundlands and I will certainly be there again next year.
